Summer Loving

There’s something uniquely healing about summer. The longer days, the air feels softer, and the world seems to exhale a little. The simple rituals bring the greatest joy. I love my first coffee in the garden with the scent of herbs in the air, bare feet on warm grass or sitting with my husband in the evening sipping something chilled whilst enjoying our slightly chaotic urban garden.
I enjoy watching everything bloom at once. Suddenly the roses start to open, birdsong wakes us and I notice people smiling more. The fruit is sweeter, the colours are richer, and I find myself leaning into the season, wanting to soak up every drop. It’s also a season of ease. Lighter food, lighter clothes, and hopefully, a lighter mood. Summer offers us a natural invitation to live more in the present, whether that’s through a spontaneous barbecue, a dip in the sea, or simply lying back and watching clouds drift across the sky.
And as I move through midlife, I’ve come to appreciate summer not just as a time for activity, but for restoration before the new academic year starts. It reminds me to pause for a few weeks, to appreciate the beauty that’s all around, and to feel grateful for these sunny warm days that feel like small miracles here in the UK!
